The restaurant at the Fort Myers Country Club on McGregor Boulevard has been known by many names over the years, none for an extended period. This time, however, the historic, local landmark seems to have acquired a lasting identity as The Edison.
Since opening two years ago, the restaurant and bar has enjoyed a tremendous turnaround, thanks to the efforts of owners Bob Pekol and Daniel Kearns, General Manager Joshua Nolan and Executive Chef Kristopher Bailey. Not only have they redesigned the establishment to better reflect its history and capitalize on its scenic location, they have reinvented it as an integral part of the community.
As a result, The Edison is a friendly, neighborhood hangout that is well suited for almost any occasion, from wedding receptions and birthday parties to business networking events, corporate luncheons and political fundraisers.
“Our philosophy is ‘Good friends make great neighbors,’” says Nolan. “We’ve been blessed by the support of the community since we opened our doors and truly care about each and every guest experience.” That attitude is evident in all aspects of the popular restaurant.
The interior features a mix of the old and new throughout its various dining rooms and bar. For example, while there is a state-of-the-art audio system and plasma TVs, there are also reminders of another era in the building’s Old Florida architecture, antique furnishings and photos, and expansive veranda, to name a few. Besides redesigning the Edison Room to include a private bar and accommodate parties of up to 250 people, there is the sunken Banyan Room with seating for 50 and various-sized banquet rooms. Including the spacious bar and sizable porch overlooking the golf course, there is room to seat approximately 400 diners, inside and out.
But there’s more to The Edison than good looks and an inviting ambience. The owners have completely revamped the menu to emphasize comfort food. Billed as “straightforward American cuisine,” offerings run the gamut from pizza and sandwiches to hearty beef, chicken and seafood entrees.
The menu is sprinkled with references to Thomas Edison, including the drink list or “Catalogue of Parts,” which features an “Edison’s Medicine” martini and several original concoctions under “Patents Pending.” Elsewhere, various items are named in honor of the famous inventor and the other Uncommon Friends, such as Ford’s Filet Mignon, the Firestone BBQ Chicken Sandwich and Mina’s Italian Wedding Soup, to name a few.
It’s worth noting that for such an extensive and diverse menu, Edison’s consistently delivers an outstanding product. Appetizers tend to be a good test of this and The Edison comes through with flying colors. Its Homemade Parmasean Chicken Tenders are the best in town, as are the Black Angus Sliders and the signature Pot Roast Nachos, to name a few. What’s more, the prices are extremely reasonable considering the quality and quantity of each item. Prices average around $9-$10 for sandwiches or salads and $13-$18 for entrees.
Under “Meat and Potatoes,” diners may choose from 12, 14 or 16-ounce portions of juicy and tender Slow Roasted Prime Rib, as well as three cuts of steak. Priced from $15.95 – $26.95, all are served with a choice of two “side cars.” These generous helpings of garlic mashed potatoes, cole slaw, sautéed spinach or veggies, salt-encrusted baked potato or rice pilaf are also available ala carte.
Signature dishes are listed under “Edison’s Comfort Specialties,” and include Moonlight Garden Lasagna (vegetable lasagna with tomato and alfredo sauces), McGregor Home Style Meatloaf (promising to be “the best you’ve ever had”) and Old Fashioned Chicken Pot Pie.
Pot pies aren’t offered on many menus these days, usually with good reason. The Edison’s, however, is exceptionally delicious with an abundance of chicken and vegetables in a rich, homemade sauce topped with a light, flaky piecrust. It’s one of many dishes guaranteed to transport diners back in time.
Of course, there’s more to The Edison than the flavors and feelings of days gone by. The restaurant’s management team has made it a point to focus on the here and now, giving back to the community in countless ways. In doing so, they have made The Edison the epicenter of special events, which seem to take place daily.
For example, Happy Hour features half-priced draft beers, house-brand cocktails and house wine from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m., seven days a week, with a complimentary buffet each day from 5-7 p.m. On Friday, the buffet includes a carving station with roast beef, hand-sliced by the chef.
Also each day the restaurant offers two lunches for $12.95, along with a dollar discount coupon for admission to the Edison-Ford Winter Estates.
Every Monday from 5-8 p.m., diners may enjoy burgers for a buck and kids eat free, and on Tuesdays, customers can get two tacos for $2.
The Edison also is known for hosting lively parties during football season as the official home of the Florida Gators alumni club; year ’round, it has become famous for its weekday Ladies Nights, which feature a complimentary vodka bar on the porch from 6-8 p.m. every Wednesday. On Thursday nights, all unescorted ladies dine free when they order off a special menu and purchase a cocktail.
During season, there’s live entertainment seven nights a week from 8 p.m. until midnight and a Sunday jazz brunch. Over the summer, The Edison books great local, live music throughout the week (visit www.edisonfl.com for updates).
Recently, The Edison launched a Happy Hour promotion on Fridays called “The Office,” which gives away a complimentary office party each week to registered participants (to register, just call). With weekly themes based on the popular TV series, the parties provide special seating, half-priced appetizers and a round of complimentary drinks for groups of up to 50 employees. In order to accommodate all who register, management plans to offer the parties indefinitely.
