If you confuse dining value with fast-food combo meals delivered via drive-through window, you need to visit Bear Rock Cafe in Fort Myers. Since opening a year ago, the eatery has proven that freshly-made meals can be tasty, quick and affordable. In fact, for less than $20, two people can enjoy a hearty home-cooked lunch or dinner – no small feat in today’s economy.
The original Bear Rock Cafe opened in 1997 in Raleigh, North Carolina and became a franchise four years later. Now in 11 states, the quick-casual restaurant has 38 locations with more on the way. Known for its comfortable and inviting environment, Bear Rock’s distinctive menu includes “hand-crafted” sandwiches, savory soups, garden fresh salads, loaded baked potatoes, oven-fresh breads and mouthwatering desserts.
In Fort Myers, childhood friends Nick Firrincieli and Lou Iamarino opened Southwest Florida’s sole Bear Rock restaurant last fall in the Shops at Jamaica Bay, just south of the U.S. 41/Gladiolus Drive intersection. They say that most first-time diners are surprised to discover that Bear Rock is not just another sandwich shop.
“We don’t just assemble food,” said Iamarino. “We prepare and cook all of our menu items, which are made to order on site.” Further, all of Bear Rock’s bread (including baguettes, croissants, rolls and more) is baked fresh daily at the restaurant.
Guests make their selections from an easy-to-read menu posted on the wall. After ordering and paying, diners receive a number, find a seat and wait for their food to arrive. The wait is brief.
Actually, it often takes longer to choose what to order than to get it, as the menu covers considerable territory. There definitely is something for everyone, including kids under 12. For just $3.99, they can get one of four items, such as grilled cheese and chicken tenders, each of which is served with green apple slices, steak fries, a small fountain drink and a toy.
Adult diners whose appetites may exceed their budgets will appreciate Bear Rock’s impressive number of affordable, high-quality choices. Other than two menu items priced at t$10.99 (the Grilled Mahi Mahi and the Crab Cake & Grilled Shrimp dinner entrees), the vast majority of offerings average $6.99 to $7.99. The appetizers cost even less and include a creamy Artichoke Dip, Bruschetta and Chicken Quesadillas.
Bear Rock has the same menu and pricing for lunch and dinner, excluding a handful of entrees available only after 4 p.m. The astounding variety features pizzetas, fresh salads, soups, hot and cold sandwiches, and numerous sides including Bear Rock’s unique Green Apple Cole Slaw and signature Sweet Potato Fries.
Hot sandwich highlights include the East Coast Crab Cake Sandwich (made of grilled lump crab and served on a toasted potato roll) and Tropical Pork Rock Sliders (slow-roasted pulled pork, caramelized sweet onions, 30-spice BBQ sauce and grilled, fresh pineapple served on two Tuscan rolls). Previously a test-market item, the sliders were so popular they were added to the regular menu earlier this year and remain one of Bear Rock’s best sellers. Recently, the restaurant also added a delicious Meatloaf Sandwich and a Ribeye Cheese Steak, both of which have been well received.
Among the cold sandwich standouts are the Asian Chicken Wrap, Roast Turkey BLT and two new items. The Rising Sunflower is made of smoked turkey, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, roasted red peppers, red onions and pesto mayonnaise on Bear Rock’s own sunflower seed bread. The Turkey Basil Wrap features a fresh tomato basil wrap with roasted turkey, diced tomatoes, leaf lettuce and buttermilk ranch dressing with bacon.
While the 3 Hour Pot Roast has always been one of Bear Rock’s best-selling dinner entrees (available as a sandwich at lunch), other don’t-miss entrees are the Meatloaf Marsala (served over red bliss mashed potatoes and topped with mushroom Marsala and Pomodoro tomato sauce), Chicken Pot Pie (served between Bear Rock’s signature flaky pie crust) and newcomer BBQ Smokehouse Chicken (grilled chicken breast, marinated in 30-spice BBQ sauce and topped with bacon and melted Cheddar).
Outstanding food is just one of many things that distinguish Bear Rock from other local quick-casual establishments. For example, in addition to soft drinks and iced tea, Bear Rock serves wine, beer and specialty coffee drinks like cappuccino and espresso. Also, kids under 12 eat free on Sunday; Wednesday is Heroes Day, which entitles firefighters, police officers and other public servants to a 20% discount.
Other Bear Rock bonuses include free WiFi access, outdoor seating and dining room rentals for corporate gatherings and private parties. It also maintains a small cafe within the BMW dealership on U.S. 41 in Fort Myers.
Bear Rock Cafe is quickly building a reputation for quality catering, which now comprises approximately 25% of its business. Various box lunches, party trays, salad boxes and snack trays are available for pickup or delivery for groups of all sizes. Recently, a local designer hired the restaurant to provide lunch and dinner three days in a row for a group of 350. Other frequent catering clients include pharmaceutical representatives, hospitals, banks, physician offices and car dealerships.
